The whole premise of Overwatch 2 is to offer a campaign. It’s not going to reinvent multiplayer, which is already a successful esport and will likely stay the exact same aside from the kind of regular updates we get now. All I want is for Overwatch 2’s campaign to be a blown-up version of Archives, though, as opposed to something that is emphatically single-player or something that incentivizes over-competing. I want it to give you plenty of opportunities to pull off a sick Barrage, but I don’t want Valkyrie or Coalescence to become pointless vs bots with stupid AI. I want there to be actual reasons for choosing to play as Winston instead of Hanzo, or Lucio instead of Tracer. I want maps that allow for the kind of absurd synergy you see in Assault on Volskaya, as opposed to just arbitrary ult-spamming in the middle of a wave-based minig

It now looks like Overwatch 2 won't be out until 2022 at the earliest, which likely means regular vanilla Overwatch won't see any significant updates for over a year. The Overwatch 2 battle pass is clean and simple. I’m surprised Blizzard didn’t decide to push the boat out or try something new with its implementation of the mechanic, because what we have here is rather basic and predictable. Some tiers have more than one reward hidden away inside them which is cool, and the variety of cosmetics is quite incredible and makes great use of the extensive hero roster, but what you’re working towards is very clear.
Hollywood has shined through as one of the most favored Overwatch fashion Skins maps with its neat aesthetic and its insane diversity of elements. From various high-ground perches for snipers to set camp, to moving platforms, to pathways which can be exploited for cheeky flanks, this area has just about everything. The versatility and elaborate nature of Hollywood's corridors and pathways will likely make it a great choice for multiple new modes offered in Overwatch
The string of failed franchises adopting this business model should have been a sign that it won't work for every game. But this is Activision we're talking about and learning things isn't one of its strong suits. Basically, I don’t think a fixed, single-player campaign is going to work for Overwatch 2, if that’s what Blizzard is currently planning. On the flip side, a robust hero shooter with an emphasis on cooperative play could do phenomenally well. I’m thinking of Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer, where you get to choose a type of enemy, a map, and a difficulty. After that you consciously work with your teammates to take on waves of baddies while completing a variety of objectives. It’s so simple, and yet so effective, because the moment-to-moment satisfaction is completely tied to using your abilities. I still think playing as an Asari Vanguard in Mass Effect 3 was the most fun I’ve ever had in a multiplayer game - it’s a shame BioWare isn’t bringing it back for Mass Effect: Legendary Edit
But it doesn’t matter. Sure, it looks as if we’re about to take the point and win the match, but then our McCree gets killed mid-Deadeye and rage quits. Don't get me wrong. Overwatch is not a dead game. It still averages thousands of players every day so I'm sure its sequel will draw in fans. But I still think that Overwatch 2 will prove to be a miscalculation for Blizzard. This downtime has definitely had a negative effect on its popularity. I used to at least jump back into it every time there was an event, but the Lunar New Year event just started up and I barely even noticed. Nor do I really care. And plenty of my former Overwatch teammates feel the same way and have migrated to other games. There's nothing to make us return other than the allure of a new skin. And why would anyone bother to get a skin for a game they rarely touch anym
