Coffee spills on your sofa can happen to anyone, and while they might seem like a disaster at first, you can easily reduce the impact and maintain your sofa's appearance with prompt action. The key is tackling the spill quickly using a suitable approach for the upholstery.

First, stay calm. Grab a clean, dry cloth or paper towel and gently blot the spill. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the coffee deeper into the fabric and spread the stain. Blotting helps remove the bulk of the spill before it soaks in.

Next, mix a solution of one tablespoon dish soap with two cups of warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution, wring it out so it's damp but not dripping, and gently dab the stained area. Start at the edges and move inward to avoid expanding the stain. After a few minutes, use another clean, damp cloth with plain water to rinse the area and remove any soap residue.

For leather sofas, skip the dish soap. Instead, use a damp microfiber cloth to lightly clean the area. Then, use a clean, dry towel to thoroughly dry the surface. You can follow up with a leather cleaner or conditioner to maintain the surface and prevent cracking.

If the stain persists, once dry, lightly dust the spot with baking soda. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes to draw out residual dampness and smells, then remove it with a vacuum cleaner.

Before applying any cleaner, consult the manufacturer’s care instructions. Some fabrics need designated carpet deep cleaning methods; improper products may damage the material.

With quick action and the right approach, most coffee spills can be handled at home without calling in experts. Keep these tips in mind to preserve your couch and relax during your coffee breaks.
