How to recover unsaved WPS documents after a crash

If you’ve ever been in the middle of typing an important document in WPS Office and suddenly experienced a crash or unexpected shutdown, you know how stressful it can be to lose unsaved work. Fortunately, WPS Office includes built-in recovery features designed to help you retrieve your lost content

The good news is that even if you didn’t manually save your file, recovery is often possible without prior saving

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you recover unsaved WPS documents after a crash.

First, restart WPS Office. When you reopen the application, it often automatically launches the Document Recovery panel

This panel appears on the left side of the screen and displays recently edited documents from before the shutdown

Look for your document in this list. If you see it, double-click the entry to reload your work

Once opened, immediately save the document to a safe location using the File menu and selecting Save As

If the Document Recovery panel does not appear automatically, you can trigger it manually

Open WPS Office and click on the File tab in the top left corner. From the menu, select Info. Then look for the option labeled Manage Document. Click on it and choose Recover Unsaved Documents

This will open a folder containing temporary files that WPS created during your editing session. These files are usually labeled with a name similar to your original document followed by a timestamp or a random string

Browse through the list to find the most recent version of your unsaved work. Double-click the file to open it in WPS

Then save it properly using Save As to ensure permanence.

If you still can’t locate your document through the recovery panel, navigate to the unsaved files storage location

On Windows, navigate to the following directory: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Kingsoft\WPS Office\11\cache\unsaved. Replace YourUsername with your actual Windows username.

On macOS, go to ~/Library/Application Support/Kingsoft/WPS Office/11/cache/unsaved.

Inside this folder, there could be unnamed temporary files with cryptic identifiers

Although these files are not immediately readable, you may still be able to recover their content via WPS

Use the Open With option and assign the appropriate WPS module based on document type

Another useful tip is to enable auto-recovery in advance for future protection. Access Settings via File > Options > Save

Make sure the option to AutoRecover is enabled at regular intervals

Set the interval to 10 minutes to balance performance and safety

This ensures that even if you forget to save, WPS creates regular backups of your work.

It’s also a good idea to get into the habit of pressing Ctrl+S frequently while working

While the auto-recovery feature is powerful, manual saving remains the safest method

Additionally, consider saving your documents to WPS Cloud, Dropbox, or Microsoft OneDrive, which offer version history and remote access in case of device failure

If none of these methods work, your document may have been corrupted beyond recovery

In such cases, consider using specialized data recovery tools for temporary WPS files

However, act quickly—every time you use your computer after the crash, new data may overwrite the deleted temporary files, making recovery impossible

Remember that avoiding loss is easier than restoring it

Consistent saving, auto-recovery settings, and software updates are essential safeguards

With these strategies, you can work with confidence knowing your files are protected
