Cable communication with the new American Empire was indispensable. In that region, as elsewhere, British cable enterprise is rivalled and assailed on all hands and in every quarter by foreign nations. Our cables, become unprofitable, will be sold to our American and German rivals, and British enterprise will vanish from that ocean, which now, in the phrase of Gibbon, is the scene of the world's debate. Thence a German cable, laid in 1900, goes to Kiau-Chau, the headquarters of the German Empire in Shantung. From Yap, again, a German-Dutch cable, so-called, but purely devoted to German interests, runs to Shanghai. Its foundation consisted of a heavy, strong mat of willow and cable, held in place by strong piles, about 1,100 in number and from forty to sixty feet in length. It was 3,000 feet in length, of which 600 feet was of rock construction and 2,400 feet of earth and gravel. Work, however, did not cease with the completion of the dam, and, since February 10, several miles of earth embankment have been built to insure permanent success.
We have a widespread presence around the globe, with branches in developing and developed nations. I do not know whether those 'publicists' and 'Imperial thinkers,' of whom we have so many at home, realize that in urging our Government to lay cables against its own citizens they are, unconsciously no doubt, merely echoing the policy most desired at Berlin. While the British Government is busy in competing with its own citizens, who in reality are fighting our battles in the Far East, Germany steps forward with a guarantee of traffic for the German-Dutch line of £76,250 a year, and persuades Holland to add another guarantee of £18,750 a year, making a total of £95,000 a year. In 1880 the British Cable Company arranged with the Spanish Government to lay a cable from Hong Kong to Cape Bolinao, near Manila, the capital of the Philippines. For, clearly, every stroke at British enterprise, whether in the Atlantic or the Pacific, accrues to the profit of the Fatherland. I remember, when visiting those stations, in the profoundest depths of the Pacific, feeling that here was the utmost boundary and frontier, the ultima Thule, of British private enterprise.
Thus Germany, too, has accomplished her desire of obtaining cable connection with the Far East independently of British cables. Last new rival of all, Japan intends, naturally enough, to seek an independent connection in the direction of America, She has already her own cables to Formosa, and thence to Foochow, She is laying a cable to connect herself with Bonin, and thus with America. Each size and series of control cable at Orscheln-which include our 3, 4, 6, and 8 series- at Orscheln has a bend radius of 3 inches, 5 inches, 7 inches, and 10 inches, respectively. We offer control cables for instrumentation and automation needs. Thirdly, modern trade and strategy cry out for alternative routes of cables between points of importance. Reserve Funds have three grounds of existence: The constant repairs in cables must be defrayed out of them. Next, after a certain number of years of life, a cable becomes unworkable, and, repairs being no longer available, must be renewed out of the Reserve Fund. But Sir John Wolfe Barry, Chairman of the Eastern Telegraph Company, decided a few years ago to afford the public considerably greater facilities than they had hitherto enjoyed as regards social messages.
A copy has been placed at each of the offices of the companies, in towns at home and abroad, in which they are permitted to deal directly with the public; and the officers of the companies have received instructions to assist the public in coding and decoding their telegrams. Applications include public buildings, schools, hospitals, department stores, cinemas, hotels, theatres, computer centres and similar applications where "standard" grade cable is specified for use in the applicable Code of Practice: BS 5266 Emergency lighting cables - standard, BS 5839 Clause 26.2d Standard grade, BS 8519 Category 1 and 2 (When tested in Tratos laboratories; pending third party approval). BS 9999:2008 Fire safety code of practice for the design, management and use of buildings. It also features a multi-process protection system, which dramatically provides safety and welding efficiency. Depending on the transmission system, power cables can be AC or DC. It can be used for many welding purposes such as household repair, hobby projects and many others. But to maintain a cable in good repair, experience directs to lay aside annually in reserve 2½ per cent. Hence the need to carry to reserve another 2½ per cent.
