Carrying out an engine cylinder pressure check is a simple method to determine the integrity of your engine’s core engine elements. This test helps you determine if the pistons, rings, valves, or head gasket are functioning as intended. Inconsistent compression across cylinders can point to mechanical failure that might lead to reduced power, erratic idle, or catastrophic breakdown.

When preparing, make sure the engine is warm but not hot. A warm engine gives precise measurements because all parts are thermally expanded to factory specs. Stop the engine and remove the ignition and unplug the fuel pump fuse or relay to stop fuel injection during testing. You should also unplug the ignition system to eliminate risk of sudden startup.

Proceed by taking out each spark plug. Label each one and its corresponding cylinder so you can return them to their original positions. Use a spark plug wrench and socket set to gently remove them. Be careful not to drop any tools into the cylinders.

Insert the gauge into the initial spark plug port. Make sure it is tightly sealed to ensure precise measurement. Have a an assistant press the gas pedal all the way down and turn the starter for 5–7 seconds. Watch the gauge as it builds pressure. Note the highest reading. Repeat this process for each cylinder, اتوسرویس داوود making sure to return the dial to zero after each measurement.

Once you have all the readings, compare them. A sound powerplant typically has compression from 120 to 170 psi. The readings should be very similar from one to the next. A variance exceeding 10–15% between the maximum and minimum pressures may indicate a problem. For example, if one chamber has substantially less compression, it could mean a damaged rings, faulty valves, or compromised head gasket.

If a cylinder’s reading is abnormally low, you can do a wet compression test to help pinpoint the failure. Introduce a drop or two of oil into the problematic cylinder’s spark plug port. Then retest the pressure. If the reading goes up significantly, the problem is likely damaged piston seals. Should the value remain unchanged, the issue is probably with the valve seals or cylinder head seal.

After you’re done, put the plugs back in, restore the fuel pump and ignition wiring, and start the engine to make sure everything is working normally. A engine health diagnostic doesn’t require high-end gear—a simple gauge and common tools, but it gives you critical information about engine health. Periodic testing prevents major failures and lowers maintenance costs.
